In addition to being tough, crabgrass has a short dormancy period, and a single plant can produce up to 150,000 seeds. When soil temperatures hit 55 degrees Fahrenheit for at least a week, crabgrass enters the germination stage.
Managing Crabgrass
Crabgrass is best managed during the germination stage. Once soil temperatures reach 55 degrees Fahrenheit, an application of a pre-emergent herbicide can keep crabgrass under control. Even with a pre-emergent application, crabgrass can still appear in the summer. An application of post-emergent herbicide will kill crabgrass growth.
